my halloween 2012 round up

well.
guess i've been a busy beaver with halloween stuff.

so in case you missed anything creepy, scary, or just plain silly, here's a rundown.

for something different, try these:
monster jars-these are quick to make and loads of fun for the kiddies
candy corn zombies-these are waaaaaay silly!

for something easy, try these:
eraser box-get rid of all those erasers
styrofoam eyeballs-even toddlers can help you do this
pumpkin centerpieces-raid the dollar store already
butter dishes-use these for treats & not for butter
batty rice krispies-go batty with these

for something kid-like, try these:
artist picture-from dollar store again!

for the more challenging food crafters, try these:
candy cupcakes-oh what a party favor
frightful pretzels-a halloween manicure
trick or treaters P-U-Ps-these are really fun to make & there's a bunch of different kinds

and finally for the witch-lovers, try these:

marshmallow ones-almost too cute to eat
caramel apple ones-easy peasy
witch's candy-easier than it looks

okey dokey!
that is the end of my halloween craziness for the year 2012. whew!

i sure hope you enjoyed them :)
now i am off to play with the turkeys.

hope you get to be a part of some halloween festivities this weekend!

i'll be back after trick or treat day with some thanksgiving stuff-yahoo!

batty rice krispie treats

i've made a lot of crazy treats for halloween.
how's 'bout an easy one today?
just use store bought rice krispies, grab some almond bark, a few sprinkles, some lollipop sticks and halloween straws.
i got the bat mold at jo-ann fabrics for 70% off.
score!

dip it in the melted almond bark, add eyes and fangs then the mouth with some melted red candy.

so one word of advice.
keep one of these hidden for you, as these are pretty good and they will fly away fast!
yeah yeah, i know it's corny but that's what happens when you make too many halloween treats!

candy corn zombie cake pops

are you ready for a scary story?
goodie!
read on...

it was a dark and stormy night.
in her attic bedroom, she was wrapped in an old patchwork quilt, and she sat on the foot of the bed, ready to watch the scary DVD she rented awhile back. with a bowl of stale candy corn and a can of diet coke at her side, she was ready for anything.

"it was gonna be a cool night." she thought, "full of frights and scares, and spine tingling terror". she tried to psych herself into a heebie jeebie frenzy so when she watched the movie, she wouldn't be scared outta her mind.

just when she settled down, alone in her home, she heard something.

bam. bam. bam.

"what was that?" she thought.

and again bam. Bam. BAM!

"who could that be at this hour of the night?", as she glanced at the clock and it was 5 minutes til midnite.

BAM! BAM! BAM!
it went again.

then louder this time.
BAM! BAM! BAM!

and once more
BAM! BAM! BAM!

"go away!" she yelled.
whoever it was, she wasn't interested.

BAM! BAM! BAM!
"ugh! testy fellow isn't he?" she thought, and ran downstairs to see who it was. but before answering the door, she peeked through the window.
"what the heck is that?!?!?!" she said in a confused state.
BAM! BAM! BAM!
she took a closer look.
"i think i need new glasses!" she said.
"there is no way, no how, that i am gonna open the door whoever you are!" she was still very confused as to what she was looking at.
BAM! BAM! BAM!
BAM! BAM! BAM!

ok, it didn't look like they were gonna go away any time soon.
she took one final look, grabbing her glasses for a clearer view.
"is that??!?! are those?!?!?!"
BAM! BAM! BAM!
and then she took another last look before she started to quiver in terror, as it seemed they were multiplying rapidly.
BAM! BAM! BAM!
but where did they come from?
"i've never seen anything like it!" she exclaimed.. "where did they get their eyes, mouth and hands?"
BAM! BAM! BAM!
"WHAT DO YOU WANT?!?! STOP BAMMING ON MY DOOR! YOU ARE FREAKING ME OUT!!!"

WE'RE HUNGRY!
OPEN UP OR WE WILL NEVER LEAVE YOU ALONE!!!
BAM! BAM! BAM!
BAM! BAM! BAM!

the girl was losing her mind. they wouldn't leave. she ran upstairs to hide under the covers, wishing she would wake up from the nightmare she was having.

BAM! BAM! BAM!
WE'RE HUNGRY!
OPEN UP OR WE WILL NEVER LEAVE YOU ALONE!!!

"never leave me alone?! what am i supposed to do? open the door and let them eat me?" she said out loud to no one in particular.
BAM! BAM! BAM!
and when she said that, she took the covers off of her, expecting someone to answer, when she spotted her bowl of candy corn at her bedside table.
BAM! BAM! BAM!
then suddenly it hit.
and she knew what to do.
"this just might work!" she said with hope.

BAM! BAM! BAM!
she grabbed the bowl of candy corn, ran downstairs, opened the door just a teeny tiny bit, and threw a piece of candy corn out.
silence.

for a second.
so she smiled, and realized what she did, worked.
and so she threw some more.
and the zombies were quiet.
cuz they were finally getting something to eat.
and slowly, ever so slowly, the zombies were full and went away.

and she was exhausted, putting the cheap DVD away and crawling into bed in the dead of the night.

until she woke up in the morning,
only to find the carcasses,
and another nightmare began.

oooooooooweeeeeeeeeeooooooooooo!!!

trick or treater push up pops

woah.
this is gonna be like a freakishly looooong post.

i'm sorry in advance but i do hope it will be worth your time. it's just that i went a little crazy when i made these, and wanted to show you, so you too can join the crazy train with me.

ready?
hold on tight!
what is this?!?
a trick or treater cookie mob?!
yup.

i've always loved the gazillion push up pop treats floating around the web but i never really got the idea for a push up pop treat without making a mess eating the treat inside.

i mean, one time i put trail mix in it for a camping party favor, thinking it was all cute when whoosh! went all the peanuts and raisins and m&m's all over the place when the kids opened them up. and then the kids just stared at the mess, shrugged their shoulders and ran off to some other party activity.

oh woah the pain i had!

it was then that i was bound and determined that i come up with a treat that would make eating a treat in a push up pop a little easier.

thus the birth of these crazy things.
i made 20 of them.
then i got tired and called it a day.

let's start already.
you'll need:
and
we'll talk about those trick or treat bags in a bit...
ok so now that you have that, take your push up pops and pull them apart.
you will use this part for now.
the tops and the "push" part.
then:
1. fill push part with melted green candy melt (i use those darn candy melts way too much!)
2. make sure the candy is patted down and looks even on all sides
3.take your milano cookie and put a blob of candy on the bottom
4.then hold it for a minute with your one hand
5. while the candy is still wet, take a toothpick and make it look like grass
6. use the top of your push pop to hold the cookie while it dries

ok, so do you have a cookie like this?
darn milano cookies are not cheap and some are broken to boot! dang!
if you find some a little busted, use it anyway.
or you can eat those too and use the vienna finger cookies instead. they're not as 'delicate".
milano surfaces are smooth and viennas are bumpy so save the smooth ones for the treats that won't be entirely covered (you'll see what i mean in a bit).

oh, and don't forget to thank your frankenstein spatula for all his help.
the candy melt dries quickly, like in 5-10 minutes. or you can stick them in the fridge to set for an even quicker time.
once the cookies are set, put your push up pops back together.
you'll see a broken cookie in the next pic (bottom right corner). that's ok.
ok ready to decorate?
 let's do a mummy.
then a pumpkin.
and a dracula.
i used the broken milano for the ghost (the candy keeps it together)...
drip some candy for the witch's hair & use a starburst for her hat.
i screwed up on her dress. oh well. it's supposed to be an ugly dress anyway right?
silly monster.
 this cat's my daughter's favorite.
i used licorice for the tail.
this guy's tail is made from a starburst candy. use a toothpick to "paint" the cookie.
 the one-eyed-one-horned dude.
with tiny wings.
i love the tiny bone sprinkles for this funny lookin' skeleton.
spiders on a tombstone.
so there you have it! whew!
for some, i used the milanos for the time when i didn't need to cover the front and the viennas when i did.

so how's 'bout a class pic?

for the gifted class.
and the not so gifted class.
don't think the cat should be in this class though...oh well.
my son told me his favorites were "all the ones in the front row" and "the back row too!"
 silly kid.
huh? where are your bags kids?
oh yeah...i'll get them.
so hold the bag real tight OK?
what?!
no no no no...

looks like we'll need some twine.
that's better.
ok so don't forget to get me some reese's cups! they're my favorite.
happy trick or treating!

but don't tell people to "smell my feet".
that's just plain nasty.
